Information

A charming revival full of unique, calligraphic warmth.

Rulebook is a revival project based on Morris Fuller Benton's "Motto". Immediately upon seeing the original specimens, there came the very specific desire to design a medieval fantasy board game just so we could design the rulebook using this type. Might be awhile on the game, but that's how this font got its name.

Originally drawn in 1915 for American Type Founders, there's much to learn and love about this family that's stood out from the moment we first laid eyes on it. But what really sets this family apart is its ability to manage well the relationship between calligraphic warmth with eminently readable capitals, especially when compared to other typefaces in its genre.

This project starts its life with quite a bit of intentional "printed" texture and goop, and we're excited to bring some crisp, new styles and other refinements to it in the future.
